| Murray River Tour- stay at the best Murray River holiday locations in B&B accommodationThe mighty Murray River begins its journey in the Snowy Mountains near Khancoban and traverses some 2,530 kilometres before it meets the Southern Ocean at Goolwa in South Australia. To Australia, the Murray River is an icon - it doesn't have the volume of water associated with other famous rivers of the World but for the thirsty continent of Australia it brings life to what would otherwise be desert! The Murray River region is recognized as the food bowl of Australia. The mighty river's waters are a mainstay for so many food products such as cereal, fruits, dairy, meat and of course, wine! At Hodgson House, Echuca's B&B on the Murray, we are keen to see that not only our guests but all travelers along the Murray River trail get an insight into what can be seen in the major regions along the Murray River. A holiday trip along the Victorian border beside the Murray River gives you an opportunity to not only see the diverse Murray River habitat but also to enjoy some of the fruits of the river. There's really many distinct landscapes along the Murray as it makes it way to the sea. Traveling by car along the River is ideal way to see it and staying in friendly B&B's is the perfect way to make the most of your tour along this great Murray River trail. The B&B's mentioned on this guide are all well-positioned to take in the Murray, the hosts all have intimate knowledge of their regions and will gladly give you the very best of advice on where to go, what to see and where to eat or drink. Warning: Be especially careful if driving at night along the Murray Valley Highway due to kangaroos, emus and farm stock that may wander on the road. These animals can do considerable damage to your vehicle. Initially, the Murray River is a clear mountain stream with the town of Corryong - home of the Man from Snowy River - by the river. Here, the river is fast flowing before hitting the Hume Weir at Albury. Rutherglen is a perfect location to base yourself while exploring this region and Holroyd House of Rutherglen is recommended by us as a welcoming B&B. Ask Charles to take you on a tour of the famous Rutherglen wineries! After Albury, the River landscape features the iconic Murray River Red gums as it passes through the internationally recognised Barmah Forest, close to Echuca. At Hodgson House, in Echuca, we light up our gum trees close to the house at night and even have a walking track by the River that goes through to the historic Port of Echuca and its famous paddlesteamers. Paddlesteamers of Echuca is something that should not be missed by any traveler. Later, the River is abutted by large lakes, such as Lake Boga and Lake Charm - both near Swan Hill. If you're planning to stay at Swan Hill then Burrabliss at Lake Boga (10-15 minutes from Swan Hill) has wonderful accommodation overlooking the Lake and Tricia's cooking is a delight! Lake Boga is currently dry - a once-in-a-lifetime event - due to the current drought, so if traveling in 2008 along the Murray make a point of stopping there to see the dry lake. It should refill in 2009 and once again be a beautiful lake attracting abundant birdlife. Lake Boga also used to be the repair depot for Catalina's during WWII and today as a Catalina museum well worth a visit. As it heads towards Mildura, the Murray passes through Mallee Country - often thought of typical Australian bush with small scrub trees along its banks. Linsley House is a fabulous B&B located about 10KM east of Mildura right on the river bank. Stay there and make sure you visit the convergence of the Murray and Darling Rivers at Wentworth while you're in Mildura! Mildura is a miracle of irrigation given the Mallee country that surrounds it. The Murray then crosses into South Australia where the Riverland region around Renmark has large limestone cliffs giving the river a whole new landscape to admire. You would be hard pressed to find a better view of the Murray River than at Paringa House, that offers excellent accommodation overlooking the river and there's plenty of history to be absorbed - Margaret will gladly tell you the story of Breaker Morant who worked on the Paringa Run when he was a youth before going off to meet is fate fighting in the Boer War. Mannum is a favorite water haven for South Australian's on the Murray River and Mannum House has a wonderful view of the River and is an ideal place to stop and once again you can be assured of a warm welcome by Michelle. The final flow, through Goolwa sees more great lakes, abundant birdlife and the mouth of Murray. Like all the great rivers in the World, the Murray River covers a diverse range of landscapes and as you can see, at our B&B's you can be assured of the best locations and we will all give you the best advice as to how you should explore our Murray River regions.
