The Murray river stretches 2,560 kilometres  from its source to its mouth.  The River Murray basin of 1,057,000 square kilometres is about one-seventh of of the total area of Australia and is considered to be Australia's food bowl.

Overseas visitors to Australia typically want an an opportunity to experience the essence of real Australian country lifestyle enjoying the land, waters, fauna and flora of the country. They also want to sample the abundant, fresh produce while meeting the people and understand something about the history of the country.

Paddlesteamers and the historic Port of Echuca have made Echuca famous throughout the world yet it was Echuca's location - the closest point the Murray comes to Melbourne - that saw the town established in the 1850's by Henry Hopwood. 

Today, visitors to Echuca can ride a paddlesteamer, walk through the Port area and gain through a sense of history how Australia must have been like in its pioneer days. At Hodgson House, guests can enjoy a 3.5 kilometre river track which leads to the historic Port and return home to help feed the family of kookaburras that arrive each night from Wharparilla Flora Reserve. With the private picnic table by the river, guests can enjoy a complimentary bottle of local wine and an anti pasta platter while watching passing Murray River parade.   International guests from many countries have visited Hodgson House  - such as Alexandra & Ismail from France who said,  "Thank you for a lovely stay. In February, Bob & Chrisanna  from Edinburgh visited us, their comments, "Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality. It was a pleasure to be here. Everything was of such a high standard.
