Murray River Red Gums are our garden!
 |
You may not see Hodgson House on the Murray on the
ABC's gardening show but we do have a unique garden. We light up the closest
red gums in our garden at night. Our 2 acres have some 60 full grown gums
(including 3 you would describe as ancient!) and a further 20 odd saplings that
are growing naturally. The ongoing drought was stressing our river gums but
Anne gives as much water as possible to try and maintain these beautiful
trees that not only look magnificent but provide important habitat for birds
in the area. |
We've also planted some 400 native trees and bushes along the boundary
of the property and of course, we are nestled next to Wharparilla Flora Reserve
with its abundant red gums.
| With the ongoing drought, Anne decided that the lawn at the back of the
house was not going to work - it was always going to be a challenge to grow it
there with our wonderful gums soaking up any spare water - so, we've
landscaped a mainly native garden which is attractive for birds and provides our
guests with a flash of colour during the year. |
 |
| A garden highlight is a redgum seat (from artisans at the Port of Echuca) where guests can sit and look
down to the river through the forest or simply watch the bird life darting around
the gardens.
For environmentally aware, we included in the project the installation of a 10,000 litre rainwater tank
to supplement our water rights from the Murray River. |
 |
| The front of the house has a native garden separated from a
small traditional garden by our car park. The traditional garden includes a
pond, with a front bridge and small running waterfall that is so relaxing
in the summer months. There's a seat by the pond for those who want
sit under the moonlight, listen to the frogs chorus and enjoy the wonderful
starry nights you get in Echuca. |

If you are into gardening, Anne would love to spend some time with you
explaining the layout she has achieved and the work she loves to put in. Come and see our unique Australian garden - it's very special to
us!
